Air India Privatization: Air India unions have threatened to strike after receiving notices to vacate the company’s staff quarters in Mumbai. The employees residing in the company’s staff quarters located at Kalina in Mumbai have been asked to vacate them within six months of the closing date of the transaction of the disinvestment deal.
Indefinite strike warning from November 2
The Joint Action Committee of Air India unions on Wednesday issued notice to the Regional Labor Commissioner of Mumbai and said that they may go on an indefinite strike from November 2 in this matter. According to the rules, a union has to give two weeks’ notice before going on strike.
In the letter accompanying the strike notice, it has been said that the employees of Air India residing in the colonies of the company have received a letter on October 5, asking them to give an undertaking by October 20, 2021, that they are ready for the privatization of the airline. Will vacate the house within six months.
Air India has a colony in Mumbai’s Kalina and Delhi’s posh area Vasant Vihar. In this matter, the union says that the unions are discussing the situation in Delhi and Mumbai daily and they will take a decision on the strike together.
asked to withdraw the circular
The union letter states that it has been learned that the land on which the colonies are located was leased to Air India by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). AAI is the owner and Mumbai International Airport Limited is the only tenant. The letter further states that there is no reason behind this that Air India should vacate the colonies in such a hurry and hand over the land to the Adani Group. There are many slums on the airport land, which have not been given any notice. The Maharashtra government is the custodian of the land records and their permission is necessary for transfer.
The joint forum has demanded that the circular issued on October 5 be withdrawn and the employees should be allowed to stay in their homes till their retirement. He has said that failing this, he will be left with no other option but to go on strike indefinitely from 2 November 2021.
