There is a lot of demand for SUV cars in the Indian automobile market and the customer base has grown in this segment especially in the last few years. At present, cars like Brezza, Nexon, Harrier, Hector are present in the market. All these models are quite popular. Due to the increasing demand for SUV models, the trend of customers towards sedans and hatchback cars is less than before.
Demand for compact, mid-side SUV
These days there is a lot of demand for compact and mid size SUVs in the Indian market. In the last month i.e. in September, 32,930 units were sold in the compact and mid-size SUV models. The overall market share of compact, subcompact and mid SUV cars is more than 51%. That is, they occupy more than half the market. This also means that every other car sold in September 2021 was an SUV.
Decline in sales of sedan cars
The passenger vehicle segment witnessed a year on year (YoY) decline of 36.6 per cent. The biggest decline in these was sedans and hatchback cars. There was also a significant decline in the sales of sedan cars. A total of 8,370 sedans were sold in September and saw a year-on-year decline of 67%.
Lifestyle Offroader Segment
Mahindra Thar sold 3,134 units in this segment. Recently, Force Gurkha has also been launched in this space, which can increase the sales volume of this segment in the coming time. In the premium SUV segment, Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster registered year-on-year growth of 24% and 24% respectively.
