Big loss to New Zealand due to IPL!
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has played down his fitness concerns ahead of the T20 World Cup, saying he has a minor hamstring strain. Williamson, however, said that a minor injury to his elbow is making it difficult for him to catch the bat. The T20 World Cup will start from October 17 but New Zealand will play its first match against Pakistan on October 26.
Williamson troubled by elbow injury
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said a day earlier that he was confident of Williamson being fully fit and the Kiwi captain reiterated the same point. Williamson told reporters, ‘It’s a minor injury, I’m fine. Progress is good. There is no worry.’ He, however, admitted that the progress of the elbow injury has been slow due to which he has been troubled for some time. Williamson told ESPNcricinfo, ‘Its progress has been a little slow. It was very disappointing for a long time. After the World Test Championship, however, it has definitely improved a bit in the last two months. But this is giving me some trouble in making the grip. If Williamson, who has scored 37 centuries in international cricket, is not fully fit, then it will be a big blow for New Zealand.
Regarding his team’s preparations, Williamson said that it is great to have former fast bowler Shane Bond in the support staff. Bond, the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians, has been specially roped in for the Kiwis to assist the spinners. Williamson said, “Bond has a lot of experience and especially being with Mumbai Indians, he has a good experience here (UAE) and carries out the responsibility assigned to him very well.”
“He will extend all possible help to our bowling coach and it is great to have him with the team,” he said. New Zealand, having won the first ICC World Test Championship, enters the International Cricket Council’s competitions as a hidden Rustom but that doesn’t matter to Williamson. He said, ‘I mean to say that such labels are put on every team, so it is good. There are match winners in every team and anyone can beat anyone so it will definitely be exciting for the spectators.
